PDO Threads - The Ultimate way to tighten, strengthen and revitalize your skin!
Short/Smooth PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are a special medical grade thread that is thinner than hair and made of a protein complex. This procedure is advised for skin tightening, skin thickening and to improve skin texture thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Mono threads can be used: Mid-face, Accordion lines, Eyebrow, Oral commissures, Nasal-labial folds, Jawline and the under-chin region along with some parts of the body.
And an even NEWER treatment has just landed! Semi-Barbed PDO threads are similar to the smooth PDO threads, but are made with BARBS to give a slightly more lifting result when used correctly. The semi-barbed PDOs are inserted in one direction and should not be confused with "Barbed PDOs" which have a different entry and exit point designed to be pulled and lift. Semi-barbed PDOs are a safe and effective alternative which can result in a more rejuvenated and smoother appearance to lower to mid facial areas. To ensure you are a suitable candidate for semi-barbed PDO threads, please contact our clinic or book in for a consult with one of our highly experienced cosmetic injectors.
How do they work?
Research has confirmed that PDO relaxes tendons and muscles, whilst a foreign body reaction (which is the body's natural immune responses) improves the blood flow to the area to stimulate neocollagenesis (the production of new collagen to the skin). Neocollagensis will mean the skin will become slightly more thicker (in a positive way), but mostly tighter and sometimes can achieve a lift in areas where a lift can be targeted, or with the use of particular threads.
When can I see results?
Immediately after treatment there will be evident swelling and bruising. This can give you an idea of how it might look when the threads have had a chance to build new collagen. The results of this treatment can be seen between 8 and 12 weeks.
How long will it last?
Short PDO threads can last anywhere from 12 - 18 months. The longevity of results can depend on many factors, including; age of the client, if the client has reached or passed menopause, radical changes in weight, any changes in general health, if the client uses cosmeceutical grade skin care, if the client protects themself from the sun, diet and lifestyle factors. For even greater results you may want to have another treatment. This can be done anytime after 8 weeks from the first procedure. This will allow more of a collagen boost along with the first treatment.
How long will the PDO remain in the skin?
The PDO threads will be metabolized in the skin through hydrolysis 6 - 8 months after the procedure. They are then excreted as Co2 and water.
Is there anything I have to stay away from after having this treatment done?
Yes there is. The PDO threads can be dissolved used heat based therapies, such as lasers and saunas. Minimal heat therapies such as LED Light Therapy and facials are safe to still have, and are recommended to get optimal results and longevity in the results.
Is this treatment safe?
This treatment is one of the safest injectables treatments available. There are risks of bruising and swelling, but they are the highest risks involved with this treatment so long as your injector is trained correctly.
What can I do to ensure most optimal results?
As Lauren (director) has always stated, it is important to treat any changes to and within the skin as a journey, and a combination of treatments will give the greatest results. It is highly important to firstly ensure you are protecting yourself from harmful UV rays, such as wearing the right sunscreens DAILY. You will also benefit from using cosmeceutical grade skin care to boost moisture, collagen, elastin and function of the skin. Cosmeceuticals bridge the gap between cosmetics and pharmaceutical-grade creams. While cosmetics change the appearance of the skin, cosmeceuticals change its function – as they are highly effective products containing active ingredients that actually change the way your skin works. In-clinic treatments will also boost results, these include any of our facials, even our Spa facials can be tailored to your needs and boost collagen. And as stated above, more treatments using PDO threads is also recommended.
History of Threads
In the late 1990s, Georgian Plastic Surgeon Dr Marlen Sulamanidze invented the technique of using barbed suture threads for lifting effects in the facial area. This technique was further refined over time by his sons. Variations of the technique and thread material have been introduced ever since. Bone resorption, facial fat changes and skin laxity all contribute to facial sagging as we age. Long threads were designed to lift and counteract sagging. Short threads were designed for the purpose of skin firming and rejuvenation, with very minimal lifting effect. Our PDO Mono and Long threads are produced by 21st Century Medical, who are a global leaders in the manufacturing and production of aesthetic PDO thread needle system.
