PIGMENTATION

Understaning Pigmentation

Pigmentation is a common skin concern that can affect anyone, at any stage of life. While it can occur anywhere on the body, it's most often seen on the face, chest, and arms due to frequent sun exposure.

Pigmentation refers to the colour of your skin, which is determined by a pigment called melanin, produced by cells known as melanocytes.
An even skin tone is generally desirable, but factors like sun exposure, hormones, and skin trauma can cause overproduction or uneven distribution of melanin, resulting in hyperpigmentation – visible as dark spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH).
On the other hand, hypopigmentation is the loss of pigment, often due to the destruction of melanocytes, and can result in conditions like vitiligo or albinism.

What causes pigmentation

There are several triggers that can cause pigmentation, including:
  • Sun exposure – the most common culprit. UV rays stimulate melanin production, leading to sunspots and uneven skin tone.
  • Hormonal changes – such as pregnancy or use of oral contraceptives (can trigger melasma).
  • Skin trauma – like burns, acne, or overuse of harsh products can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Genetics, medications, and certain medical conditions may also play a role and stimulate the melanocyte cells.

Prevention is key

Prevention is key when it comes to pigmentation, prevention is more always going to be more effective than correction. Here’s how to reduce your risk:
  • Daily SPF is non-negotiable. UV radiation is the #1 cause of pigmentation. Reapply throughout the day, according to your skin type.
  • Wear protective clothing when possible like hats and sunglasses.
  • Antioxidants, especially Vitamin C, help protect the skin and reduce pigment formation from the beginning.
  • Avoid Irritation or picking the skin and stay away from harsh, unprescribed skin products that can cause more damage than good.

The power of skincare

Targeted skincare plays a major role in managing and treating pigmentation. At Lilly Cosmetic Clinic, we use clinically active products that regulate melanin production, stop pigment from forming and promote healthy skin cell turnover.
Key Ingredients We Use:
  • Tyrosinase Inhibitors – these block the enzyme responsible for melanin production. Common ones include:
    • Kojic Acid
    • Arbutin
    • Vitamin C
  • Exfoliating Acids (AHAs & BHAs) – like glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid, which remove dead pigmented cells and brighten the skin.
  • Daily Sunscreen – a must-have to prevent pigment reactivation.

We stock Payot and Mayerling skincare, which allow us to completely tailor routines for all skin types and concerns. Their antioxidant-rich formulations and brightening ingredients pair perfectly with our professional treatments.
